Harlem in Disorder: A Spatial History of How Racial Violence Changed in 1935

3:30 AM to 5:00 AM

The incidents of violence around 3:00 AM marked the end of the disorder. When Deputy Chief Inspector McAuliffe toured the neighborhood at 4:00 AM, he “reported that all was quiet.” Police called from precincts outside Harlem were sent home at that time. Officers left many of the intersections at which they had been stationed leaving radio cars patrolling the avenues to maintain order.

The restoration of order did not mean the end of police violence against Harlem's residents. That was very much part of the regular organization of life in the neighborhood. Just before dawn, officers in radio cars would make additional arrests, one of which would lead to the first death of the disorder.
