Harlem in Disorder: A Spatial History of How Racial Violence Changed in 1935

Locations of violence in Harlem in 1935

The violence on the streets of Harlem during the disorder was not entirely out of the ordinary for 1935 in terms of the incidents found in the District Attorney's case files and Black newspapers collected for Digital Harlem, but the greatest proportion of those assaults took place in homes and businesses, and in hallways and roofs. That violence was widely dispersed around Harlem, including in the areas of the disorder — with the exception of shootings, which were rare above 125th Street.

Only one in five (11 of 56) felony assaults occurred on the street in the rest of 1935, throughout the neighborhood. By contrast, shootings were not so widely distributed, clustered below 125th Street and largely absent in central and northern Harlem. A similar proportion, 7 of 31, took place on the streets as did assaults.
