Harlem in Disorder: A Spatial History of How Racial Violence Changed in 1935

MCCH Meetings (24)

The members of the MCCH met on twenty-three occasions between March 22, 1935 and March 20, 1936. Twenty meetings are included in attendance collated by MCCH staff, with fifteen meetings in the original memo and five additional meetings added by hand, most likely by Eunice Carter. The three other meetings are likely those to finalize the report on March 6, 11, and 20. An additional meeting apparently took place sometime in late September, 1936, to discuss the failure of the mayor to release the MCCH report. There are no records of that meeting. MCCH members also met twice with Mayor La Guardia, once before their investigation began on March 22, 1935 and once after they submitted their report, on June 30, 1936.

The MCCH discussed the events of the disorder at the nine meetings held during the investigation and at the meeting on February 14, 1936 about Frazier's draft report. The meetings of March 6, 11, and 20 about the report and its recommendations may also have discussed the events, but there are no records of the meetings on March 6 and 11 and no details of the discussions on March 20.

Minutes also did not survive for meetings on October 31 and November 8. Not all those minutes record who attended, so the collation of attendance prepared by MCCH staff was the only source for overall attendance. Like most meeting minutes, these records are often brief summaries rather than records of discussions and do not always clearly indicate when the MCCH made decisions.
