Harlem in Disorder: A Spatial History of How Racial Violence Changed in 1935

[Photograph] "Caged in Harlem Riot Orgy," Daily Mirror, March 22, 1935, 1.

Caption: “CAGED IN HARLEM RIOT ORGY - Under the watchful eyes of police, some of the 120 prisoners netted in the bloody Harlem riots in which two died and scores were wounded, are shown in the coop at Police Headquarters before being arraigned in Harlem and Washington Heights courts. All was ominously quiet in the Harlem sector of the city, but police were prepared for new outbreaks.”

The image is shot from above, with the bars of the cell in the foreground. Approximately half a dozen Black men are visible behind the bars, with three uniformed white patrolmen behind them. The poor quality of the microfilm reproduction obscures the details of the image.
