Harlem in Disorder: A Spatial History of How Racial Violence Changed in 1935

[Photograph] "Does He Look Dead?" New York American, March 21, 1935, 4.

Caption: "Does He Look Dead? Lino Rivera, the boy Harlem rioters were told had been beaten to death by store officials when he tried to steal a penknife. The only part of the story that was true was the attempted theft. He is shown at home, where he was safe with his mother while the mob thought it was avenging him."

This image appears identical to one published in the New York Evening Journal, but that is credited to the newspaper's own photographers. Another apparently identical photograph credited to the Daily News photographers can be seen at Getty Images.
