Harlem in Disorder: A Spatial History of How Racial Violence Changed in 1935

[Photograph] "Fire Blamed on Rioters," Home News, March 20, 1935, 5.

Caption: "Not content with smashing windows, attacking pedestrians and creating disorders in the streets of Harlem, some of last night's rioters turned their talents to the setting of fires. They piled papers on some of the rooftops and set them ablaze. Some fires were set in stores. This kept the firemen almost as busy as the police. Here the fire-fighters can be seen entering a tailor's shop at 429 Lenox Ave. after a fire had been started. The damage was not great, and firemen also succeeded in subduing the roof-top fires without much difficulty."
