Harlem in Disorder: A Spatial History of How Racial Violence Changed in 1935

[Photograph] "Police stand guard at this liquor store, protecting the few bottles that remain after rioters tore down an iron grill and smashed windows," New York World-Telegram, March 20, 1935, 3.

The photograph shows a storefront with a display window either side of a door set back from the street, with signs above the entrance as well as above the windows. Two white uniformed patrolmen stand in front of the store, on in front of the doorway, the second to his left. Both are looking to their right along the street. The poor quality microfilm image makes it difficult to see the details of the damage. Both windows have broken glass and damaged and empty display. There is some broken glass in front of the windows, but no other debris.
