Harlem in Disorder: A Spatial History of How Racial Violence Changed in 1935

Sam Jamison, Murray Samuels and Claudio Diabolo picket in front of Kress' store

Around 6.30 PM, three men arrived at the front of Kress’ store and began picketing. Newspaper reports identified them as members of the Young Liberators, an organization with ties to the Communist party with an office nearby, at 262 Lenox Ave near 126th Street. Two of the men, Sam Jamison, Murray Samuels were white and allegedly college students; Claudio Diabolo was black. They carried signs that read “Kress Brutally Beats and Seriously Injures Negro Child and Negro Women. Negro and White Don’t Buy Here” and “Kress Brutally Beats Negro Child.” <<photographs>>. [Yng Libs leader on someone coming to office to tell about boy - he went to investigate, these men put together signs and picket - had previously gathered info - see Thompson on crowds in street, others had tried to speak to crowd, later would distribute circular]

Soon after began marching back and forward in front of store, police arrested the three men [Smith's testimony + Moran's testimony] - charged with unlawful assembly / riot - treat signs as incitement of crowd, so categorize with those shouted, signs as a form of speech

Men identified in multiple reports, but truncated narratives of newspapers confused their activities, lumped with the two men arrested for trying to speak to crowd. Two police officers on the scene distinguished those groups speaking in the MCCH's public hearings, [although Thompson did not?] The MCCH's report mentioned only the two speakers, not the three picketers, without naming any of them.
