Harlem in Disorder: A Spatial History of How Racial Violence Changed in 1935

Police in front of Kress' store on West 125th Street from 8th to 7th Avenues

[from when closed store c 5:00 PM - Thompson?]

Although Inspector Di Martini told a MCCH hearing that he saw no “indications of further trouble” when he left Kress' store at 6:00 PM, the inspector did station "Sergeant Bauer, two foot policeman, one mounted policeman in the rear to prevent a riot” and left additional officers remained in front of the store. Patrolman Moran told an MCCH hearing that 10-15 officers were present when Daniel Miller spoke to the crowd and the first window was broken at around 6:15 PM. Patrolman Shannon, who had been in the store from 4:00 PM was one of those officers. Some were mounted patrolmen, another element of the department's crowd control forces.  [Who made the arrests - NB Gordon taken away in a radio car?].

What did they do - worked to clear the street - pushed to avenues

- then to rear - cleared by 7:15 PM, when Emergency Truck arrived at 124th Street - part of wave of reinforcements, which Di Martini called for, either when he arrived, or later, around 8:00 PM, as attacks on stores on West 125th Street increased?
