Harlem in Disorder: A Spatial History of How Racial Violence Changed in 1935

In the grand jury on March 22 (9)

As grand jury proceedings were closed and those indicted not named until they appeared in the Court of General Sessions, there are no newspaper stories about these hearings. The District Attorney's case files provide the evidence that the cases of these men were heard on this date. The case files for James Hughes, Isaac Daniels and Charles Saunders record March 22 as the date of their indictment. That was the same day as police presented bench warrants in the Harlem Magistrates Court based on the men's indictment as a result of Dodge's grand jury investigation, leading to their discharge and rearrest on those charges. The details of the indictments provided to the press by Dodge indicted they were likely indicted on March 21.
