Locations of violence in Harlem in 1935

The violence on the streets of Harlem during the disorder was not entirely out of the ordinary for 1935, but the greatest proportion of the assaults took place in homes and businesses, and in hallways and roofs. That violence was widely dispersed around Harlem, including in the areas of the disorder - with the exception of shootings, which were rare above 125th Street.

Only one in five (11 of 56) assaults occurred on the street in the rest of 1935, throughout the neighborhood. By contrast, shootings were not so widely distributed, clustered below 125th Street and largely absent in central and northern Harlem. A similar proportion, 7 of 31, took place on the streets as did assaults.
