Harlem in Disorder: A Spatial History of How Racial Violence Changed in 1935

The Negro in Harlem. A Report on Social and Economic Conditions Responsible for the Outbreak of March 19, 1935 (1935), Subject Files, Box 167, Folder 8 (Roll 76), Records of Mayor Fiorello H. La Guardia, 1934-1945 (New York City Municipal Archives).

This version of the report is slightly different from the version published by the New York Amsterdam News on July 18, 1936, and reprinted by Arno Press in 1969. Those differences appear mainly in the conclusion and recommendation chapter, which historian Lindsey Lupo described as "watered down" in this version, revised by the commission members from the version submitted by E. Franklin Frazier. The text of the chapter on the "Events of March 19," however, is the same in both versions of the report. The published version, however, does not include the text of the leaflet issued by the Communist Party, only the text of the leaflet issued by the Young Liberators. The text of both pamphlets appears in the version reprinted by Arno Press.
