Harlem in Disorder: A Spatial History of How Racial Violence Changed in 1935

Unnamed white man assaulted

A group of black men allegedly attacked an unnamed white man at 125th St and Lenox Avenue at some point in the disorder. Police arrested one member of the group, Rivers Wright, a twenty-one-year old black man. No other details were reported.

Wright appears in multiple newspaper lists of those arrested during the disorder. His sentencing several days later is also reported. Only one story provides any details of the circumstances of his arrest. The Home News reported on March 21 that Wright was arrested "after he and a number of others are said to have attacked a white man at 125th St and Lenox Ave."

When arraigned, Wright was charged with disorderly conduct, not assault, as was the case with half of those arrested for assault. That charge suggests that the alleged victim suffered only minor injuries. One of the others charged in these circumstances was also convicted in the Magistrates Court, and like Wright, was sentenced to only a few days in the workhouse.
